Chemicals that float on water?

I know so far that only oil floats on the water. And on that context I want to know what are some of the chemical composition that keeps some of the volcanic rocks floating on water.

What are the chemicals responsible that cause it to float?

Basically, any substance that is less dense than water will float on water. By Archimedes principle, such a substance will displace an amount of water equal to its own mass.

I wonder how this relates to boats etc..? Do they all follow that principal? Probably not.

Yes, boats follow that principle...even steel ships...the overall density of a boat or ship, which is mostly hollow, is still less than that of water.
