\(\displaystyle |x - 7|\)

given:

\(\displaystyle x = - 5\)

so

\(\displaystyle |(-5) - 7|\)

\(\displaystyle |-13|\)

\(\displaystyle 13\)

The absolute value of a negative number is positive.
